Susceptibility ranking

Classes of sheep vary in their susceptibility to roundworms. Weaners and lambs are the most susceptible, followed by lambing ewes, especially maidens. Dry ewes and wethers usually have good immunity to the roundworms that cause scour. Susceptible sheep develop large worm burdens and pass out large numbers of worm eggs in their faeces. Resistant sheep develop smaller worm burdens and pass out fewer worm eggs. Sheep are not infected by most cattle roundworms and vice versa, the exception being Trichostrongylus axei or stomach hair worm.
